old friends
I miss my friend! Something I've wrote about her ft apocalyptic imagery (lol).
“Willow would have hated____”
You didn’t know her
Because the truth is Willow would have laughed at it anyways
More importantly, she would have absolutely seen the comet coming
2 weeks before it hit
The planet, blown to a pulp with fingers and wood chunks dispersing around the air
She would have seen it coming from a recent dream
written about it in blue cursive ink
on a wet paper napkin
infused with iridescent cigarette ash
Marlboro Ultra Golds pack
(the second one of the day)
stained with maroon puckers and a beaded rosary her grandmother Emma gifted in 2005 dangling off the page
This is after she’s done lamenting about this harsh Manhattan winter
It always hit her the hardest
“But at least it wasn’t sticky like fucking West Hollywood last spring. Jesus Christ.” she’d say monotonically, hiding behind a warm smirk
There is nothing sardonic about this moment
Here!
Laughing in a room filled with unfamiliar faces
She felt familiar to everybody
in a dive bar that is too cramped to be
truly comfortable
Salted sweat exchanging as the planet rumbles
from a comet no bigger than the same Moon that was gleaming quietly last night
Fiona Apple’s “I Want You To Love Me” blasts gracefully with the thick brimstone air clouding the room within seconds
It’s too loud to hear anything, really
Except for when
She climbs on the bar top to say,
“I told you fuckers so!!”
The fire has the windows bursting wide open now
As the glass smithereens graze their cheekbones
Cutting a bit of flesh here and there
They all believe her
Now they’ve noticed—
With hell crackling on their skin
It’s just a day too late for an apology, or a moment to process anything
And we all know:
Early is early
and
Late is late
Everything I’ve ever done,
Was easily reflected in her
Willow’s buttoned dark brown eyes
Surreally weeping at me
Mirroring it all back to back
As the heat rises
Only to size me up one last time
For good measure
Before the planet swallows us all
With one harsh gulp
And that’s, that
